What can you expect during counselling?
Counselling is a process that enables people to explore many aspects of their life, thoughts and feelings through talking openly and freely in a safe and 'therapeutic' space. The counsellor or therapist neither judges, nor offers advice but asks questions to help you become more open to the choices you may have and feel more 'in control" of your life.
The counsellor gives the client an opportunity to express difficult feelings such as anger, resentment, guilt and fear in a confidential and supportive environment.
Clients may be encouraged to examine parts of their lives that they have found difficult to face before.
There may be some exploration of early childhood experiences in order to throw some light on why an individual reacts or responds in certain ways in given situations? This is often followed by considering ways in which we can change such behaviours, and develop healthier patterns of behaviour going forward.
